The
Original Polly Texture Toy began development and
marketing in 1989. It was the first bird
toy introduced in the Pet industry to include fabric
and bright colors. We are very proud of that.
Sally
Blanchard, bird behaviorist and editor of "The
Pet Bird Report," took an interest in our toys
calling them "a new concept in bird toys"
and enthusiastically recommended them.
As
we began designing the Polly Dolly it became evident
that a profusion of bright color was what many well-fed
birds were starving for. Consider the friendly camouflage
of vibrant flowers in the rain forest. Consider the
attraction of other birds in the wild, identifiable
by their unique color coding. Polly Dollys are
camouflage in a cage.
Upon
researching the market, we learned that the only color
in bird toys at the time was an occasional plastic
(usually red) head. The choice of toys was limited
to chunks of wood. No one was using fabric.
My
birds loved my clothes. My clothes were part of their
"natural" environment. The obvious
ingredient to interesting toys was fabric. We added
and assortment of materials, i.e. jute, sisal, string,
leather and wood, for a variety of interesting textures
for our tactile little friends.
As
the Polly Dolly evolved, we began making the "Special"
toys to match their plumage. This concept has brought
us to another level of understanding. We have learned
that some birds are only attracted to their signature
plumage colors. They will deliberately eliminate color,
other than their own, from combinations like the cockatoo,
who hated red and blue. He was raised with a macaw.
This
abstract "dolly" gives a completely satisfying
preen for single birds who need a pretend friend to
care for.
